On the whole, this is one of the most ambitious gangster films I have seen in Indian cinema. But given the characters have now been introduced, if there are sequels, I think the pacing issue will probably solve itself. The only issue I had with the film was that I felt that the editing was abrupt and therefore the film had a jumpy feel. As a result, the film's original cut was supposed to be 5 and a hours long, which were then cut to about 2 hours and 40 minutes. In Vada Chennai, while there are characters that are the equivalent to this, it appears so far that there are several more minor characters that may or may not rise to prominence given they were included in this film. In Wasseypur, I remember reading somewhere that the likes of Ramadhir or Faisal were actually many different characters rolled into one and this allowed for the development of Wasseypur to be viewed through the lens of their rivalry. It is the story of a place told through the lens of a few characters. Like each of the above where the central characters are the favelas of Rio, Wasseypur and Baltimore the central character here is Vada Chennai (North Chennai) or more accurately North Madras. I think the obvious comparators, in my opinion, are City of God, Gangs of Wasseypur and The Wire. It is very very good despite having some flaws.
